Are off-the-shoulder tops appropriate for the office? While you may be quick to say “yes” if you work in a more laid back environment, what would you say about a law firm? Today I share with you my thoughts, tips, and a few of my favorite pieces.
Law Student me would say “no, off the shoulder tops are definitely not appropriate.” Why? Well, because law student me believed that I should wear button ups every day or I wasn’t “office appropriate.” Thankfully, this phase wore out pretty fast and I began experimenting with fashion at the workplace.
Attorney me now says “yes, off the shoulder tops are appropriate for the office.” Emphasis is added because I still would not say they are appropriate for court. Before I continue let me set this straight: my office is laid back. As long as you look presentable you are okay. I say this because if you work in an extremely corporate environment this may not be appropriate and I will not be held responsible for any write-ups due to dress code violations haha.
Tips To Rocking Off-The-Shoulder Tops At The Office
When incorporating “risky” pieces like this I always recommend pairing the item with something more conservative. For example, wear a longer skirt or tailored trousers. This will help deliver the message that you understand you are in a professional environment but still love to play around with fashion.
Taking my own advice into consideration I decided to give the off the shoulder look a try by pairing it up with this beautiful long pencil skirt I picked up at target a few years back. Although the skirt’s pattern makes it “pop” the length of these skirt makes it more conservative.
I would also always recommend to have a cardigan or blazer with you. My office is cold so a cardigan definitely helps. Also, an impromptu client or staff meeting might come up and you definitely want to be ready for that.
I have chosen a few pieces that I think are appropriate at the end of this post. When choosing your pieces remember that you are still in a professional environment regardless of how “casual” your office may be. I would stay away from off the shoulder crop tops or tops with too many colors. I specially liked that the top I wore was long sleeved because that way I only showed off my shoulders and no additional skin. Many people say that off the shoulder tops are a definite no for the office, what do you think?
